This essay deals with the energy crisis in the context of a philosophical reflection about the environment. The text presents a general view of the subject of energy and delves into the concepts of responsibility and care expressed by thinkers Hans Jonas and Martin Heidegger.

Global warming, mainly caused by greenhouse gas emissions, presents an emergency in which green energies are expected to play a significant role. While renewable technologies such as wind, solar, and hydropower dominate green energy generation, geothermal energy is gaining attention as a viable and reliable alternative. When combined with heat pumps, geothermal systems offer a consistent heat supply unaffected by weather variability, making them particularly suitable for replacing fossil fuels in applications like air conditioning and domestic hot water in residential (...) and commercial buildings. Geothermal energy’s growing prominence highlights its potential as a critical component in addressing the global climate crisis. This study examines the application of Deep Learning (DL) models to forecast the temperature of the input collector in a heat pump fed by a geothermal installation in a bioclimatic residential building, aiming to optimize energy management and minimize environmental impacts. In addition to a statistical baseline model, ARIMAX (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average with Exogenous Variables), five different DL model architectures were developed, tuned, and evaluated: Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM), Transformers, LSTM-Transformer, and a hybrid approach that combines LSTM and Convolutional Neural Network. Among the experiments, the GRU model performed better, achieving a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of $2.19^\circ C$, with the LSTM-Transformer model following closely with an RMSE of $2.23^\circ C$. These results highlight both the GRU’s efficiency and the hybrid approach’s potential in balancing forecasting capability and effectiveness. These findings emphasize the critical role of predictive analytics in optimizing energy systems in bioclimatic contexts. (shrink)

The compulsion of proofs is an ancient idea, which plays an important role in Plato’s dialogues. The reader perhaps recalls Socrates’ question to the slave boy in the Meno: “If the side of a square A is 2 feet, and the corresponding area is 4, how long is the side of a square whose area is double, i.e. 8?”. The slave answers: “Obviously, Socrates, it will be twice the length” (cf. Me 82-85). A straightforward analogy: if the area is double, (...) the side is double. Nevertheless, the answer is wrong. Socrates wants to lead the slave to the right conclusion. The boy should reach the truth through steps that are all “his own”, performed with full conviction. To this aim, Socrates addresses a series of short pressing questions to the slave boy. Simple questions provoke equally simple replies, though the boy is sometimes puzzled and surprised by the answers he feels compelled to give. In the first part of the exchange the boy is gradually forced to admit that a square B with double side (i.e. side of length 4) has an area which is not double, but four times as big, i. e. 16. In the second part the boy hazards the guess that the square with double area has a side of length 3, since 3 is between 2 and 4. But Socrates easily drives him to acknowledging that if the side is 3, the area of the resulting square C is 9, not 8. The boy can only exclaim: “By Zeus, Socrates, I do not know!”. In the third part, at Socrates’ prompting, the diagonal of the original square A is drawn within the second fourfold square B. Responding to Socrates’ questions, the boy is led to conclude that the square D whose side is the diagonal of A is precisely the required square: its area is 8. (shrink)

O presente artigo pretende mostrar uma dupla perspectiva do ensino da filosofia proposto de forma disjuntiva: aprender a filosofar ou aprender a filosofia, representada, respectivamente, por Kant e por Hegel. A análise dessa questão será desenvolvida dentro do contexto da filosofia kantiana, nela destacando três aspectos: a) o ideal de perfectibilidade do gênero humano; b) o preceito da Aufklärung do pensar por si mesmo e o exercício crítico da razão, e c) a necessidade da coação como instrumento para o cumprimento (...) do caráter normativo da conduta humana. Estes aspectos serão, também, abordados na filosofia de Hegel, bem como as suas conseqüências para o ensino da filosofia, e da possibilidade de uma escolha não disjuntiva de uma ou de outra perspectiva. Suarez precursor de Descartes? A doutrina suazeriana sobre a causa final revista Resumo: Stephan Schmid busca mostrar que Francisco Suárez é um precursor da crítica que Descartes fez à causalidade final na explicação da natureza. Suárez teria reduzido a noção de causa à causa eficiente, teria eliminado a presença da causa final nas ações dos agentes naturais, isto é, daqueles entes que não possuem intelecto, e teria eliminado a presença da causa final nas ações divinas. Deste modo, ele seria um (...) precursor do pensamento mecanicista de Descartes e, sob certo aspecto, também de Espinosa. Contra esta interpretação, procuro mostrar que Suárez não reduz a noção de causa à causa eficiente, não elimina a presença da causa final nem nos agentes naturais, nem na ação divina e que, portanto, ele não pode ser considerado, neste assunto, um precursor de Descartes nem de Espinosa. Causa final.: Stephan Schmid try to show that Francisco Suárez is a forerunner of the criticism made by Descartes of end causes in the explanation of nature. The hypothesis is that Suárez had reduced the notion of cause to efficient cause, had eliminated the presence of end causes in the actions of the natural agents, i. e., of the beings that have not an intellect, and had eliminated the presence of end causes in the actions of God. In this way he would be a forerunner of the mechanistic thought of Descartes and, from a certain aspect, of Spinoza. Against this interpretation I try to show that Suárez do not reduce the notion of cause to efficient cause and that he eliminates the presence of end cause neither in the natural agents nor in the actions of God. This article sheds new light on the interesting but little-studied figure of Thomas Scott of Canterbury (1566–1635). In presenting Scott's ideas I will modify the interpretation laid out by Peter Clark whose groundbreaking study, ‘Thomas Scott and the Growth of Urban Opposition to the Early Stuart Regime’, is still the only secondary source that pays detailed attention to Scott and his thought, especially his religious opinions. The necessity to revisit Clark's interpretation of Scott's place within the political and doctrinal debates (...) of early Stuart England stems from the conviction that his political work and his ideological stances deserve more subtle attention. Most importantly, they were part of the emerging reaction against the policies of the first two Stuart Kings which can be labelled ‘country patriotism’. The little we know with certainty about Eupolis' Marikas can be summarised in a few lines. The play was produced at the Lenaea of 421 b.c. The demagogue Hyperbolus was satirised under the name of Marikas, and was represented as a man of little or no culture. Marikas/Hyperbolus was a slave. This has been denied in the past, but is now made clear by the commentary on the Marikas in P. Oxy. 2741 πρς [ν] δεσπότην Ὑπέρβολος. Aristophanes complained in the (...) Clouds we possess that Eupolis had availed himself of the Knights for his Marikas, and it is in fact possible that the idea of Marikas as a slave was borrowed from the Knights, because some of his traits seem to correspond to those of the Aristophanic Sausage-seller. The play apparently had two semi-choruses, one of rich and one of poor people. The point of the name Marikas has long been debated. Ancient sources are at least agreed that it is ‘barbarian’. Herodianus 1.50,12 Lentz does not go beyond stating that Marikas is an νομα βάρβαρον παρ τ κωμικ. Hesych. μ 283 Latte has more to offer: Μαρικν· κίναιδον. ο δ ποκόρισμα παιδίου ρρενος βαρβαρικόν. Background: In cancer care, many clinical contexts still lack a good-quality patient–health professional communication about diagnosis and prognosis. Information transmission enables patients to make informed choices about their own healthcare. Nevertheless, disclosure is still an ethically challenging clinical problem in cancer care. High-quality care can be achieved by understanding the perspectives of others. The perspective of patients, their caregivers, physicians and nurses have seldom been simultaneously studied. Objective: To investigate the phenomenon of diagnosis and prognosis-related communication as experienced by patients, (...) their caregivers, and both their attending nurses and physicians, to enlighten meanings attached to communication by the four parties. Methods: A qualitative study using interpretative phenomenological analysis was performed. Participants and research context: Purposive sampling of six patients, six caregivers, seven nurses and five physicians was performed in two oncological hospitals in Italy. Ethical considerations: Local Ethics Committee approved the study. It was guided by the ethical principles of voluntary enrolment, anonymity, privacy and confidentiality. Results: Three main themes were identified: (a) the infinite range of possibilities in knowing and willing to know, (b) communication with the patient as a conflicting situation and (c) the bind of implicit and explicit meaning of communication. Conclusion: The interplay of meanings attached by patients, their caregivers, and their attending oncologist and nurse to communication about diagnosis and prognosis revealed complexities and ambiguities not yet settled. Physicians still need to solve the ethical tensions in their caring relationship with patients to really allow them ‘to choose with dignity and being aware of it’. Nurses need to develop awareness about their role in diagnosis and prognosis-related communication. This cognizance is essential not just to assure consistency of communication within the multi-disciplinary team but mostly because it allows and enables the moral agent to take its own responsibilities and be accountable for them. In this article, we report on a three-pronged effort to create a hypothetical learning progression for quantification in science. First, we drew from history and philosophy of science to define the quantification competency and develop hypothetical levels of the learning progression. More specifically, the quantification competency refers to the ability to analyze phenomena through (a) abstracting relevant measurable variables from phenomena and observations, (b) investigating the mathematical relationships among the variables, and (c) conceptualizing scientific ideas that explain the mathematical relationships. (...) The quantification learning progression contains four levels of increasing sophistication: level 1, holistic observation; level 2, attributes; level 3, measurable variables; and level 4, relational complexity. Second, we analyzed the practices in the Next Generation Science Standards for current, largely tacit, assumptions about how quantification develops (or ought to develop) through K-12 education. While several pieces of evidence support the learning progression, we found that quantification was described inconsistently across practices. Third, we used empirical student data from a field test of items in physical and life sciences to illustrate qualitative differences in student thinking that align with levels in the hypothetical learning progression for quantification. By generating a hypothetical learning progression for quantification, we lay the groundwork for future standards development efforts to include this key practice and provide guidance for curriculum developers and instructors in helping students develop robust scientific understanding. Deception has evolved to become a fundamental aspect of human interaction. Despite the prolonged efforts in many disciplines, there has been no definite finding of a univocally “deceptive” signal. This work proposes an approach to deception detection combining cognitive load manipulation and T-pattern methodology with the objective of: (a) testing the efficacy of dual task-procedure in enhancing differences between truth tellers and liars in a low-stakes situation; (b) exploring the efficacy of T-pattern methodology in discriminating truthful reports from deceitful ones (...) in a low-stakes situation; (c) setting the experimental design and procedure for following research. We manipulated cognitive load to enhance differences between truth tellers and liars, because of the low-stakes lies involved in our experiment. We conducted an experimental study with a convenience sample of 40 students. We carried out a first analysis on the behaviors’ frequencies coded through the observation software, using SPSS (22). The aim was to describe shape and characteristics of behavior’s distributions and explore differences between groups. Datasets were then analyzed with Theme 6.0 software which detects repeated patterns (T-patterns) of coded events (non-verbal behaviors) that regularly or irregularly occur within a period of observation. A descriptive analysis on T-pattern frequencies was carried out to explore differences between groups. An in-depth analysis on more complex patterns was performed to get qualitative information on the behavior structure expressed by the participants. Results show that the dual-task procedure enhances differences observed between liars and truth tellers with T-pattern methodology; moreover, T-pattern detection reveals a higher variety and complexity of behavior in truth tellers than in liars. These findings support the combination of cognitive load manipulation and T-pattern methodology for deception detection in low-stakes situations, suggesting the testing of directional hypothesis on a larger probabilistic sample of population. El artículo hace un análisis del discurso de Beccaria contenido en su libro Dei delitti e delle pene y extrae las ideas relativas a la percepción como argumento considerable dentro de su propuesta político-criminal para fundar la utilización de ciertos instrumentos de la penalidad, con base en su pensamiento sobre la estética, entendida como un estudio sobre la percepción, realizado en algunas investigaciones personales. Igualmente, toma ciertas ideas de la epistemología gravitante de la época, para fundar su desiderátum político-criminal.

A première vue, Friedrich Nietzsche et Cesare Pavese n'ont rien en commun. Et pourtant! Tous deux sont orphelins de père. Tous deux ont grandi dans un entourage exclusivement féminin. Tous deux n'ont jamais su se faire aimer d'une femme. Tous deux sont également poètes. Tous deux ont eu une vie brève, solitaire et émouvante. Et tous deux ont amplement écrit sur Turin, sur son atmosphère si parfaitement " psychologique ". De cette ville, qui fut un temps la capitale de l'Italie, (...) Nietzsche n'en a dit que l'abord exaltant, aristocratique et baroque, tandis que Pavese en a recraché toute la tristesse, avec ses vastes quartiers industriels, ses usines qui noircissent le ciel, ses ouvriers exténués. C'est à Turin que Nietzsche perd définitivement la raison. Il a quarante-quatre ans. Et c'est à Turin que Pavese se suicide dans une chambre d'hôtel. Il a quarante-deux ans. Le philosophe allemand meurt le 25 août 1900. L'écrivain piémontais meurt le 26 août 1950 - un demi-siècle plus tard, à un jour près. En cherchant des rapprochements entre ces deux artistes exceptionnels, l'auteur pénètre dans leur drame intime, dans les blessures inguérissables de leur enfance ; et l'on revit les derniers instants tragiques qui les conduisirent à la folie et à la mort. Ce livre, s'il est empreint de gravité, est avant tout une rêverie faite de détours et de coïncidences. Les murs de Turin y transpirent. Ils parlent. This essay deals with two seventeenth-century intellectuals, the Aristotelian philosopher at Padua, Cesare Cremonini, and the Jesuit controversist, Robert Bellarmine. In the years of the cosmological affair of 1616, both defended their cosmological conceptions by relying on the principle of authority. However, they embraced different sources of legitimation in matters of natural philosophy. While the Padua professor stick to (what he considered to be) the letter of Aristotle, basically a secular interpretation of his world conception, Cardinal and Inquisitor Bellarmine understood (...) the cosmos against a theological background. In particular, Bellarmine subordinated natural philosophy to exegesis and the authority of the Scriptures, and this allowed him to depart from Aristotle to some extent (for instance on the fluidity and possibly the corruptibility of the heavens). Yet, the two thinkers also shared the criticism of the major astronomical novelty of their time, namely the planetary system of Copernicus and his followers. But their objections rested on different worldviews and authorities (Aristotle and the Scriptures, respectively). Cremonini also supported a vision of celestial animation which was received with much preoccupation by religious authorities as they feared that his views might revive forms of astral worshipping. This essay discusses the manner in which Cremonini and Bellarmine received geocentrism and cosmology in very different, even opposite, manners, especially concerning the relation between natural philosophy and theology, and the reconcilability of cosmology with the Scriptures. Quando Cesare cadde sotto i pugnali dei congiurati, Ottavio con alcuni amici si trovava ad Apollonia per completare gli studi e, sotto la guida di fidati centurioni, per apprendere i primi rudimenti dell’arte militare. Scoppia la guerra civile, durante la quale entrambi (...) i consoli, sotto il cui comando Ottaviano militava, perdono la vita in circostanze poco chiare. Ma è probabile, come si diceva, che li avesse uccisi Ottaviano per ottenere subito il potere. Consapevole d’essere stratega poco abile, affida la conduzione di tutte le guerre per lo più a validissimi legati. Nondimeno in Germania non riesce ad evitare sia la sconfitta di Lollio sia quella, ben più disastrosa, di Vario. (shrink)

O Guarda-Chuva de Regras é um original ensaio sobre o positivismo legal, em especial acerca das circunstâncias inglesas da Jurisprudência filosófica. Ainda que consista em uma investigação de natureza analítica, o autor mostra uma profunda sensibilidade no que concerne à invenção conceitual. Seja atrelando o direito moral mínimo ao conteúdo mínino do direito natural, de modo a evidenciar os vínculos entre Hart e Hume, seja mostrando os requisitos mínimos à própria concepção de natureza humana. Kiraly incorpora ao debate filosófico jurídico (...) em língua portuguesa autores fundamentais para a academia anglo-americana, mas pouco lidos no Brasil e em Portugal, como John Austin e o já citado Herbert Hart. No início do ensaio são abordados aspectos estruturais do positivismo legal na Inglaterra. Os conceitos de comando e soberania em Austin são explorados para dar ambiente à contestação apresentada por Hart à idéia da fundamentação do direito em ordens com ameaças correlativas. Assim, se o objeto é a concentração de poder pelas soberanias, o hábito pacífico fundado em ameaça parece ser uma hipótese incompleta. Para tanto, Kiraly expõe a classificação de Hart sobre as regras sociais, evidenciando a especificidade do direito, uma vez ligado a uma regra de reconhecimento. (shrink)

This article presents a cross-case comparative-historical and discourse analysis of Hitlerism in the 1920s–1930s and Trumpism and Bolsonarism in the 2010s–2020s. By examining their rhetoric and actions, it reveals enduring ideological continuities rooted in Counter-Enlightenment worldviews, with clear influences from Traditionalism and fascism that extend beyond their populist tactics. The research involved primary sources such as speeches, statements, and media coverage alongside secondary scholarship. The study highlights how their tactics serve to undermine democracy and consolidate authoritarian power. The article critically (...) examines the overuse of the populism label, arguing it obscures deeper supremacist, fundamentalist, and authoritarian elements common to both historical and modern far-right movements. Ultimately, the analysis underscores the necessity of a nuanced, historically informed framework to understand and cope with contemporary reactionary politics. It calls for further research into the ideological connections and transnational networks sustaining these movements, emphasising the dangers posed by normalising authoritarian tendencies under simplistic categorisations. Organized youth sport has become a prominent activity in Western societies, one around which myriad families structure their daily lives. Despite its popularity, or rather because of it, youth sport is besotted with complex problems. One distinctive set of problems pertains to children’s opportunities to benefit from engagement in sport. Such problems require a reflection on the conditions of justice. Then, it articulates considerations of justice in youth sport. Together, these sections provide a basis to formulate the general features of a just youth sport. What emerges is a vision of youth sport that the adults involved in it should emphasize and implement if their young charges, and youth sport, are to flourish, as well as a novel approach to formulating and justifying normative criteria to make youth sport more just. The first goal of this paper is to reply to a number of criticisms levied by Gunnar Breivik and Robert L. Simon against an account of sporting skills I published almost 20 years ago in which I distinguished between constitutive and restorative skills and examined their normative significance. To accomplish this goal, I first summarize my characterization and classification of skills and then detail the criticisms. After responding to the latter, and thus reconsidering and hopefully strengthening my account of skill (...) in sport, I turn my attention to Scott Kretchmar and Tim Elcombe’s inquiry into the skills involved in competitive sport. These authors claim that contesting skills demand the same respect usually accorded to testing skills. The second goal of this paper is then to explore Kretchmar and Elcombe’s inquiry under the light of my reconsidered analysis of skill. I specifically advocate a plausible relationship, both in terms of their distinctive character and relative import, between testing and contesting skills and constitutive and restorative skills. In doing so, I seek to present a more comprehensive account of skill in non-competitive and competitive sport. (shrink)

O objetivo deste texto é o de articular o pensamento do David Hume com a arte contemporânea, cuja consolidação demanda uma continuidade entre as imagens, bem como entre os conceitos e os objetos, abstratos ou não. O cético entende a filosofia a partir da pictorialidade do pensamento, cabendo a Hume aprofundar essa perspectiva pictórica, o que emerge nas suas análises sobre as relações, a identidade, a cor, dentre outras. A sugestão é que a proximidade entre o ceticismo e a poesia (...) torna mais suave entender como objetos comuns se tornam obras de arte, como caixas de sabão em pó ou simples cadeiras são feitas em operações visuais de conceitos. A arte contemporânea seria dependente, no seu largo espectro, da habilidade de perceber como um cético. Ademais, indica-se que na arte contemporânea é a contemporaneidade entre as obras e os objetos que libera a imaginação a poder transitar horizontalmente entre os artifícios. E, nessa perspectiva, o artigo sustenta que o Tratado converge à arte contemporânea ao dotar o fenômeno da imagem com vocabulário material a partir do qual o dentro e o fora da consciência ou não são bem demarcados ou estão em clara relação de continuidade. The connection between sport and morality is a key focus of J. S. Russell’s scholarly work. He rejects the ‘separation thesis’, which claims that sport has a significant degree of autonomy and thus its own set of values separate from those of society. Instead, he supports the ‘continuity thesis,’ which suggests that the moral values at the heart of sport reflect more basic moral values found outside its boundaries. Therefore, for Russell, individuals involved in sport do not leave ordinary morality (...) to enter a separate sporting one. Rather, they engage in a social practice whose core moral principles are extensions of broader morality. In this paper, we challenge Russell’s defense of the continuity thesis by analyzing his writings on the role of play in sport and the value of dangerous sport. The opening section reviews the separation and continuity theses. Next, we critique Russell’s defense of the continuity thesis, presenting him with two options outlined in the following section. One option is to more effectively explain how his defense of the continuity thesis aligns with the moral exceptionalism he supports for play and dangerous sports, as well as the actions and valuations they foster and legitimize. The second option is to consider whether, in some cases, certain values are discontinuous with and therefore do not simply express, reflect, or reinforce general moral ideals and commitments outside sport. In that section, we also propose an alternative to the dyadic conceit—the ‘separanuity thesis’—to clarify the link between sport and morality, and we encourage Russell to reflect on it in light of our examination of his work. We close by outlining how his discussion of risk and play affirms our proposal. (shrink)

Several critical scholars studying authoritarianism today argue for a return to the studies of the first generation of the Frankfurt School to comprehend our social and political context. Following this suggestion, I propose an encounter between the Frankfurt School’s studies on authoritarianism and current Marxist feminist studies on the family. More specifically, I link our recent tendency to return to authoritarian forms of government with the crisis of care identified by feminist theorists. The fact that women are massively working outside (...) the private sphere while still shouldering the majority of care work (and childcare) may create a new oedipal configuration, in which it is no longer only the father who interrupts the mother-baby relationship but also work obligations. This configuration helps explain not only our attachment to the capitalist market but also the nostalgia for the father behind the authoritarian comeback. (shrink)

In the context of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the intensification of hostility against the Huguenots in the 17th century, Pierre Bayle uses the notions of tolerance and intolerance to explain the difference between the effects of literal interpretation of the scriptures and the effort to understand. To explain Hume's political history, I employ the concept of melancholy to measure the challenge of escaping indolence and despair without yielding to the sectarian imposition of the idea and activity (...) as resources to avoid confronting collective impasses. History would undergo the reverse tension between tolerating melancholy, to work through its reasons, and intolerance of melancholy, moving toward the anticipation of political effects. (shrink)
